Assessing the target community is the first step in the Strategic Prevention Framework process. Community assessment determines the current needs, resources, and attitudes concerning substance abuse in the community. By examining epidemiological data and surveying the community, organizations can begin the planning process more efficiently.
The Coalition for Asian Substance Abuse Prevention (CASAP) utilizes Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) to determine focus areas for the coalition and plans of action. This method gives the Chinatown community greater agency to establish their own priorities while utilizing CASAP’s experience and resources.
The community assessment measures for Armour Square and Bridgeport communities include:
- Illinois Youth Survey
- Focus Groups
- Alcohol Retailer Interviews
- Environmental Scan
- CASAP Quarterly Meetings
- Yearly Town Hall Meetings
- Tobacco Advertisements Community Survey
